Episode 16 | Next-Gen Nuclear | SmrREC

I have been wanting to do an SMR episode since I first started Energy Cast. Small Modular Reactors are a more manageable way to create nuclear energy. They are prefabricated, unlike conventional nuclear reactors. They are safer. An SMR can automatically shut down in the event that a reactor's water supply ran out. And they do not require billions in capital expenses.

Joseph Smith, Ph.D. is a professor at Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST), and lead on the school's SMR Research and Education Program. The school has partnered with Westinghouse and Amren, the region's utility, to study the benefits of SMR's on the local economy.

We discussed the benefits of SMRs, as well as this country's policy on nuclear waste. We also focused on NuScale Power, the first company to submit an application for an SMR to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
