Episode 2 | Cool Fuel Cells | FCET

In my second episode of Energy Cast, I attended the first public demonstration of the PozCellTM, a hydrogen fuel cell developed by FCET, a Georgia-based firm.

FCET demonstrated electric current at 60°F, a record for this technology!

Fuel Cells come in two predominant designs, Proton Exchange Membranes (PEMs), and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). PEMs are cheaper, cooler, but less efficient and require ultra-pure hydrogen. SOFCs are more efficient, require less-pure hydrogen, but are hotter and more expensive. The FCET PozCellTM is an SOFC that operates cooler than a PEM and is far less costly to build.

I sat down with their president, Mark Deininger, at Catawba College on March 17 in between their public and an investor presentations. Some of the topics we discussed were opportunities for fuel cells, the efficiencies in fuel consumption gained from the technology, and some solicited advice about how to successfully navigate a start-up.
